Cultural Note
Ìlẹ̀kẹ̀ means beads, ornaments in Yorùbá. Traditionally ìlẹ̀kẹ̀ are a mark of exquisite beauty and because of the intricate craftsmanship involved, they are used to ordain royalty, women, children or other important figures in the community. Traditionally ìlẹ̀kẹ̀ also provided medicine and protection on a person's path.
Most commonly today ìlẹ̀kẹ̀ are known for their spiritual significance, these ìlẹ̀kẹ̀ òrìṣà represent a practitioner's connection or initiation to òrìṣà. Traditionally a person will receive ìlẹ̀kẹ̀ from an Olòrìṣà, Babaláwo, or Ìyánífá (initiated priest). Ìlẹ̀kẹ̀ òrìṣà are often consecrated in rituals and ceremonies. Ìlẹ̀kẹ̀ òrìṣà, are known to provide protection against sickness, attraction of good luck, wealth, children, health, stability, long life, success and peace of mind, return of lost things.
