Botanical description
The tree is small to medium in size, reaching 3 1⁄2–26 feet in height. The bark is mottled. The fruits contain high amounts of ascorbic acid (vitamin C), and have a bitter taste that may derive from a high density of ellagitannins.
Cultural Note
In the Buddhist tradition there are many references to the fruit.
In Theravada Buddhism, this plant is said to have been used as the tree for achieving enlightenment, by the 21st Buddha, Phussa Buddha. In Hinduism, this fruit is sacred to all three members of the Trimurti, the Hindu supreme trinity.
In traditional Indian medicine the fruit is used to treat many conditions and imbalances. It is considered a powerful rejuvenative tonic that nourishes the body, supports purification, longevity, cooling emotional heat, and strengthening inner radiance and resilience.
