Botanical description
Black cohosh is a smooth (glabrous) herbaceous perennial plant that produces large, compound leaves from an underground rhizome, reaching a height of 9.8–23.6 in. It grows in a variety of woodland habitats, and is often found in small woodland openings. The rhizomes and roots contain various saponins as well as cimifugic acids and other phenol carboxylic acids.
Cultural Note
Folks Indigenous to Turtle Island (U.S.) traditionally used black cohosh to treat gynecological and other disorders. In Western herbalism during the 19th century, the root was commonly used to treat snake bites and inflamed lungs. Today it is recognized as an effective support for menstrual balance and menopause transitions.
