Cultural Note
In Lucumí tradition, Yéwá is the òrìṣà who reigns over the inner part of the cemetery where the dead are laid to rest. She represents purity, seclusion, and transformation through death. She is not death itself, but rather the spiritual sanctity of death — the still, sacred presence that allows for rebirth and spiritual continuation. She is the guardian of moral purity and spiritual discipline. In many stories, she withdrew from the world to preserve her chastity and became the spiritual matron of the dead.
