Cultural Note
Yoruba communities have used ‘igbas’ (Yoruba word for calabashes) in ritual practice and as a container for spiritual and magical substances. Igba appears in descriptions of Yoruba traditional stories, divination and praise poetry. In Yoruba cosmology one half of the igba (Yoruba word for calabash) represents heaven and the other represents the sea, or “primordial waters”, on which the earth floats.
Èṣù-Ẹlẹ́gbára is known as the messenger òrìṣà (Divine Force of Nature), the guardian of cross roads and opener of paths. Èṣù-Ẹlẹ́gbára symbolizes polarity and the divine manifestation of choice, encompassing the varying paths and phases of fate and life.
