Ìlẹ̀kẹ̀ means beads, ornaments in Yorùbá. Traditionally ìlẹ̀kẹ̀ are a mark of exquisite beauty and because of the intricate craftsmanship involved, they are used to ordain royalty, women, children or other important figures in the community. Traditionally ìlẹ̀kẹ̀ also provided medicine and protection on a person's path.
Most commonly today ìlẹ̀kẹ̀ are known for their spiritual significance, these ìlẹ̀kẹ̀ Ìfá represent a practitioner's connection or initiation to Ìfá or specifically the òrìṣà Ọ̀rúnmìlà. Traditionally a person will receive ìlẹ̀kẹ̀ Ìfá from a Babaláwo or Ìyánífá (initiated priest). Ìlẹ̀kẹ̀ Ìfá are often consecrated in rituals and ceremonies.
