Cultural Note

Burning incense is an ancient tradition that has held a sacred role in the daily lives of people, with evidence stretching back to some of the earliest civilizations. In ancient Kemet, incense was central to spiritual practice. Resins such as frankincense and myrrh were burned in temples as offerings to the gods, used in ceremonies, and incorporated into preservation and cleansing rituals—believed to purify, protect, and guide the soul in both life and the afterlife. Across North and East Africa, incense was also deeply tied to cultural exchange. In places like Somalia, Ethiopia, and Eritrea, the burning of resins is interwoven into the fabric of the region. Throughout the day incense is burned in homes, churches, and communal gatherings to cleanse spaces, ward off illness, mark transitions, and invite blessings. In many sub-Saharan African traditions the sacred use of incense and aromatic woods is common practice. Among the Yoruba, herbal smoke and burning resins accompanied ancestral veneration and spiritual cleansing ceremonies. Among the Zulu and Xhosa peoples of Southern Africa, aromatic plants and woods were burned during healing rituals and rites of passage ceremonies.  Across African cultures (both on the contenent and throughout the Diaspora), rising smoke is understood as a living conduit—a bridge between the earth and the unseen world—carrying prayers, intentions, and àṣẹ upward. Incense awakens one’s inner sense. Perfect for daily use.
