Cultural Note

Frankincense has been used in medicinal preparations, incense, and perfumes for thousands of years. A number of incisions are made into the bark of the tree and the gum resins are allowed to ooze out and solidify for a few weeks.

Usage

Put a charcoal tablet in a heat resistant incense burner and light it. Wait 5–15 minutes for the charcoal to reach the right temperature, as indicated by a layer of ash forming on the tablet. Then, add a small amount of resin on top of the hot charcoal. It is recommended to begin with just 1 piece to see how much smoke is created before adding more. The resin and dust will melt and burn, creating fragrant smoke. Repeat as desired until the charcoal is done.
