Cultural Note

Obi has a wide range of spiritual uses and meaning depending on the species. It is one of the most common ingredients used in West African culture not only for spiritual rituals but also cultural ceremonies, ingredients in traditional meals, and medicine. Like ikin, the number of lobes an obi carries a different symbolism and determines the use.

This particular obi come from the Kola Nut Tree and is commonly referred to as a kola nut. This tree is a tropical evergreen tree native to West Africa but thrives well in warm, humid climates like those of the Caribbean. It can grow up to 65 feet tall producing star-shaped yellow flowers with purple markings, which eventually develop into large, woody pods containing the sacred Kola Nuts. This tree is considered by the Igbo people of Nigeria to be the first tree to grow on earth.

The nuts are known for their stimulating effects due to their natural caffeine and theobromine content. Traditionally, Kola Nuts have been chewed to reduce fatigue, boost energy and improve mental alertness. They are also used in the preparation of beverages and medicinal formulations to aid digestion, relieve migraines, treat respiratory issues, fatigue and act as a natural appetite suppressant.
