A Turritella terebra is a species of marine sea snail, a type of mollusk known for its long, tower-like shell. Also called screw shells or augers, these snails are found in the Indo-West Pacific and live on sandy or muddy bottoms in sub-tidal areas.
Cultural Note
In Yoruba cosmology (Ìṣẹ̀ṣe), each òrìṣà governs specific aspects of nature and human life. This shell is often associated with the òrìṣà Kórìkóto. Kórìkóto is sometimes known to protect children, aid in fertility, and assist in birth or early life.
