Cleaning Tips: To clean your yoga mat, simply combine 2 teaspoons of soap powder with cold water in a cotton pouch. Mix well until a lather forms. Wash your mat gently with the mixture and rinse it thoroughly with a hose. Rinse off any remaining soap nut lather or residue from the mat. Ensure your mat remains dry prior to storage. Warm and damp mats can foster bacteria growth. Hang your mat over a chair back or porch railing to dry completely. Avoid putting your mat in the dryer. Roll the dried mat tightly and store it in a well-ventilated space. Open the mat regularly for airflow, even when not in use.
Cultural Note
The straw mat is a symbol of humility, grounding, and sacred order in the Yoruba cosmology. It represents the meeting point between the human and spiritual realms—a space where àṣẹ (divine creative power) flows freely. Whenever a mat is unrolled, it signals the opening of sacred space and the invitation of ancestral and divine presence. The mat also serves as a consecrated surface that grounds the spiritual energies being invoked.
Dharba (Desmotachya bipinnata) grass, is revered in Vedic culture for its energetic protection and grounding qualities. Used during meditation, mantra, and ritual, Dharba grass is said to hold the ability to insulate the body from disruptive energies and enhance the flow of àṣẹ. Dharba is traditionally described as a sacred purifier that harmonizes the body’s subtle energies, supporting mental clarity, focus, and inner stillness.
Sambu grass (Cymbopogon martinii), embodies the cooling, grounding, and cleansing energy. Known for its grounding fragrance and ability to purify the energetic field, Sambu grass has been used to invoke clarity, calm, and sacred protection. The natural aroma of the grass supports relaxation, relieves stress, and gently harmonizes the flow of àṣẹ within the body.
