Cultural Note

Obí Agbón (Yoruba for coconut divination tool) is the most commonly used divination tool by Lucumí or Palo Mayombe practitioners. Lucumí is an African spiritual tradition practiced in Cuba (and throughout the Caribbean and US). This tradition has its roots in Ifà which was brought to Cuba by enslaved West Africans, the majority of them Yoruba, between the 16th and 19th centuries. Anthropologists research has shown that obi may be the oldest of the divination tools used in Ifà.

Palo developed among enslaved Bakongo people from Central Africa in the 16th to 19th centuries in Cuba.

*Obi Abata is the Yoruba name to describe the original obi divination tool using kola nut.
